Chapter 9
The days passed. I woke up to an empty bed, went to the library, and came back to my rooms to pretend to be asleep until Elijah snuck in after dark and slipped into bed. We didnât speak. We barely saw each other.
So much for marital promises and eternal loyalty or whatever. Maybe he regretted opening up to me that night, and this was his way of telling me he wanted to reaffirm the distance between us.
I didnât understand. Last week, we were talking about friendship. Now, we were back to being strangers. It was frustrating, but I had other things to keep me occupied until Elijah finally revealed whatever it was that he was doing when he abandoned me at his fatherâs palace all day long.
I practically lived in the library, though I didnât see Amalia again. Her marriage to Prince Declan was scheduled for next month, so she was likely busy with preparations⦠or hiding from them.
The day after Amalia offered me the hint about Rivenâs interest in snakes, and the library sent me a clue in the form of Rivenâs red ribbon, I became an expert in Lilith snakes. I refreshed myself on the legend of Lilith, the God of the Underworldâs first wife. She was a demon and as evil as a creature could be. The darkest pits of Hell were created with the sole purpose of containing her, but many believed that her shapeshifting abilities allowed her rare and fleeting chances for a small part of her to escape.
The Lilith snake was the stuff of nightmares. Much like the demon from which they allegedly came, they were considered a bad omen. According to one of the books the library presented to me, Lilith snakes were often mistaken for hallucinations. Those who were unlucky enough to see them were accused of psychosis and delirium because the snakes could speak without being heard by anyone but their intended target. Similarly, they were selectively invisible.
It explained why I couldnât see whatever was on Rivenâs arm the day of Roseâs trial or whatever was hidden in the branches of the oak tree the night of my wedding. It made sense why Riven got that faraway look in her eyes as if she was listening to a song that nobody else could hear.
Can you see it, too? Can you hear it?
Rivenâs questions made perfect sense to me now. My sister was haunted by a Lilith snake.
Such an experience was considered a harbinger of doom. Lilith snakes were believed to lead their victims to their downfall, but in a way that the person didnât realize they were cursed until it was too late. Sometimes, the Lilith snakes might even seem like they were bringing you closer to something you desperately wanted. They could also fashion terrible nightmares designed to drive you insane over time.
There were few known victims of Lilith snakes and even fewer books that dared to go into minute detail about the taboo subject of the God of
